An odyssey for survival with echoes of The Wages of Fear and Sorcerer—The Weight stars Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke as Samuel Murphy, a veteran who is torn from his daughter and sent to a work camp at the height of the Great Depression. There, looking to escape from the camp’s dire conditions, Murphy receives a high-stakes offer from the camp’s cruel warden (Russell Crowe): if Murphy smuggles gold out of a remote mine with a dangerous crew of prisoners, the warden will grant Murphy his freedom.

"Padraic McKinley’s feature directorial debut is a hugely confident survivalist tale that’s as bluntly effective as the primitive weapons employed in this bare-knuckle saga."
"McKinley establishes just the right amount of physical and emotional stakes, and a cast led by Ethan Hawke infuses the drama with believable camaraderie, conflict, and tension. It’s the kind of atmospheric, exciting period drama we don’t really get much anymore."
