First a barbed parody of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” before it spawned a hit music video on MTV, Born in East L.A. improbably evolved into a full-fledged comedy feature starring, written, and directed by countercultural icon (and parody singer-songwriter) Cheech Marin. Now, forty years after its pop cultural moment, Marin’s broad satire plays as a prescient preview of Trump-era immigration panic, where even citizens are subject to deportation. Rudy (Marin) is an American citizen and East L.A. striver who finds himself caught up in an immigration raid and gets deported to Mexico, where he struggles to get back over the border and find his way home.

"An interesting skewering of the systems on both sides of the border that keep those seeking a better life impoverished and criminalized."
"An across-the-board winner, an exuberant crowd-pleaser that marks its writer-director-star Cheech Marin's first effort apart from his longtime partner Tommy Chong."
