Nuestro Cine 2025

“For our second season of Nuestro Cine, we’re celebrating the stories of Latino families in the U.S. with Nuestra Familia— shining a light on their struggles, their triumphs, and their adventures. Whether it’s the story of children reconnecting with their estranged father as in the film In the Summers, the multigenerational saga of a family over the decades in the movie Mi Familia, three brothers sticking together after losing their parents in The Cruz Brothers and Miss Malloy, a young mother trying to do right by herself and her kids in I Like It Like That, a father working to provide for his family in El Super, or kids saving their spy parents from a supervillain in Spy Kids, Nuestro Cine: Nuestra Familia is an appreciation of the onscreen families that remind us of those who love us, support us, and sometimes get on our nerves.

At a time when it feels like our stories are being pushed back into the shadows, I am proud to spotlight these movies – from the heartbreaking dramas to the spy family thriller – at the Jacob Burns Film Center as part of the series Nuestro Cine: Nuestra Familia, which has always been a family affair. My mother gave me the idea for the name of the series and has listened to me describe a number of these movies as I made the final selections for this year’s edition. Some of these stories are tougher to watch than others, but no matter what these families endure, they stick together and despite the odds, they still love each other. And in these difficult times, that is worth celebrating.”
