Let’s Raise a Glass and Drink a Toast…

This is a post by JBFC Volunteer Dotty Battel

To our new series “Wine & Film: The Perfect Pairing,” opened May 7, and is screening every Wednesday evening throughout the month of May. But there’s more good news…..each screening will be introduced by an editor from Wine Enthusiast magazine and a wine reception in the upstairs gallery will follow afterward.

Briefly, here’s what you need to know:

May 13, 7:30    Barolo Boys: The Story of a Revolution

Meet the Barolo Boys, a group of struggling young winemakers in Italy’s exquisite Langhe region in the 1980s and 90s who went from struggling producers to winemakers with rock star status.  The tale of how they did it is the subject of this fascinating and fun film.

This suspenseful melodrama “….subtly transforms from one genre to another the way an exquisite, complex wine teases the nose before finishing strongly on the palate. (RogerEbert.com). Set in the glorious wine country of southwestern France, it’s the powerful story of the relationship between a domineering, aging patriarch, who deals with wine far better than he does with people, and his hapless adult son. As Pliny the Elder used to say “in vino veritas.”

May 27, 7:30    A Year in Champagne

“A fun and effervescent portrait of the people, places, and process behind bubbly” (Santa Barbara Independent).  The film tracks the progression of 6 houses and growers over the course of a year as each seeks to make the ultimate cork popper.
