Deadly SINema

The Burns is proud to present “Deadly SINema,” a film series running from June 23 through June 29. The series explores the Seven Deadly Sins through seven different films, rediscovering lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride on the big screen. We are working in conjunction with “The Seven Deadly Sins,” a series of exhibitions presented by the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Bruce Museum, Hudson River Museum, Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Katonah Museum of Art, Neuberger Museum of Art, and Wave Hill.

Some highlights of the series are:

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, a film tied to the sin of gluttony, showing on June 23. Centered around six friends who are repeatedly interrupted when they try to sit down and eat together, the film is followed by a Q&A with Pleasantville Mayor Peter Scherer, Jack Algiere, Four Season Farm Director at Stone Barns, and Emilie Clarke, who has a one-person installation at the Katonah Museum of Art, “The Delicacy of Decomposition” (opening July 12).

The next film, The Garden of Earthly Delights, screens on June 24, and is about the sin of lust. It is about a passionate love affair that is brought on by Hieronymus Bosch’s painting of lustful encounters. Afterwards there is a Q&A with Livia Straus, Director of the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill, and curator of the HVCCA exhibition “Seven Deadly Sins: Lust” (through July 26).

On June 25 the Burns is showing Into the Woods, the Sondheim musical about envy. It tells the story of a witch (Meryl Streep) who puts a curse on a childless baker and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt) that can only be destroyed if they both get magical items from classic Grimm fairy tales. Afterwards, there is a Q&A with Bartholomew Bland, the Hudson River Museum curator, and the multimedia artist Adrien Broom, whose installation “Envy” is open to the public at the HRM from June 6 through September 26.

Our family film, The Gold Rush, showing June 27, is the classic Charlie Chaplin film about the Little Tramp’s search for gold in the Klondike. It is about the sin of greed. There is also a contest tied to the film. Pay close attention to the slideshow before the film starts, and win golden treasure in a contest after the movie. The slideshow and contest are sponsored by the Neuberger Museum, whose exhibition “Gold” (July 12 through October 18) explores greed through the work of 24 contemporary artists.
