Jerry Garcia (with Leon Gast) directs this rarely-screened concert film made up of highlights from the five-night run at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom that capped off the Grateful Dead’s 1974 tour. The final night of shows was referred to as “The Last One,” as the band was planning to go on hiatus and would indeed not tour extensively for all of 1975. Coincidentally, two years after these shows were filmed, Winterland would serve as the site for another goodbye, The Band’s “Last Waltz” concert. This film is distinguished among concert films for its focus on the band’s fans and their often extreme commitment to the Deadhead lifestyle. The documentary also features interviews with band members including Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Phil Lesh, and includes a short but lively recap of the group’s history. Plus, some incredible animation sequences from Gary Gutierrez!
