The Ballad of Wallis Island

Opens April 4—tickets on sale now

The Ballad of Wallis Island follows Charles (Tim Key), an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and dreams of getting his favorite musicians, Mortimer-McGwyer (Carey Mulligan and Tom Basden) back together. His fantasy quickly turns into reality when the bandmates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island, but old tensions resurface as Charles tries desperately to salvage his dream gig.

JBFC Programming Coordinator, Ian LoCascio writes, “For as much as the characters in The Ballad of Wallis Island spend the film reckoning with the past—I think that it’s ultimately a film about people learning, or re-learning, how to connect with each other and look toward a brighter future. It’s a very optimistic film, and I think it offers a welcome respite from this tense and divided world we find ourselves in today.”

"The Ballad of Wallis Island is the best kind of crowd-pleaser: disarming, joyful and full of compassion for its oddball characters."
Tomris Laffly, Variety
"The film bewitches you with its seemingly spontaneous humor, a cadre of original soulful folk tunes, and its adoration of the breathtaking surroundings."
Robert Daniels, RogerEbert.com
