Based on Carrie Fisher’s semi-autobiographical novel, Hollywood actress Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) is on a slippery slope as a recovering addict when, upon her exit from rehab, she is required to stay with her mother (Shirley MacLaine), who is also an actress. Suzanne therefore struggles to maintain both her sanity and her sobriety in the company of her mother.
Streep and MacLaine star alongside Gene Hackman, Dennis Quaid, and Richard Dreyfuss in Mike Nichols’ film about a very real mother-daughter relationship set against the backdrop of 1980s Hollywood.
