Left-Handed Girl

Free Member Q&A with director Shing-Ching Tsou and actress Nina Ye

Shortlisted for International Feature Film for the 2026 Academy Awards

Directed by Shing-Ching Tsou and co-written by her longtime collaborator Sean Baker (Anora, The Florida Project), Left-Handed Girl centers on a single mother and her two daughters who return to Taipei to open a stand at a buzzing night market after several years of living in the countryside. Each in their way will have to adapt to this new environment to make ends meet and maintain the family unity. But when their traditional grandfather forbids his youngest left-handed granddaughter from using her “devil hand,” generations of family secrets begin to unravel.

"In a young girl’s face is all of Left-Handed Girl, as Nina Ye, like Shih-Ching Tsou behind the camera, translates the immensity of this sprawling saga into immediate, intimate detail."
Marshall Shaffer, Slant Magazine
"Tsou and Baker’s script sharply examines what it really means to lose face: which shames are noble, which are indulgent, and what should be passed from one generation to the next?"
Tammy Tang, The Guardia

A multiple Independent Spirit Award and Gotham Independent Film Award nominee, Tsou is known for her keen humanism, emotional precision, and commitment to portraying underrepresented communities with honesty and empathy.
