Apollo 13

4K Restoration

Based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission, Ron Howard’s inspiring and riveting story of the real-life space flight that gripped a nation was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) find everything going according to plan after leaving Earth’s orbit; however, when an oxygen tank explodes, the scheduled moon landing is called off. Subsequent tensions within the crew and numerous technical problems threaten both the astronauts’ survival and their safe return to Earth.

"This engrossing account of the nation's most perilous moon shot embodies what many people consider to be old-fashioned American virtues in a virtually pristine state."
Todd McCarthy, Variety
"Playing the tough, commanding Jim Lovell is a substantial stretch for Mr. Hanks, but as usual his seeming ingenuousness overshadows all else about the role. There's not a false move to anything he does on screen."
Janet Maslin, New York Times

This film is part of the Ron Howard Retrospective series.
