The new, critically acclaimed, documentary of singer Amy Winehouse, Amy, opens at the Burns July 10. Directed by Asif Kapadia and distributed by A24, Amy takes an exclusive look into the tragic life of London-based singer Amy Winehouse, mainly through never-before-seen home footage.

Amy Winehouse exploded into the international limelight in the mid-2000s. Winehouse earned critical and commercial success in the UK with her 2003 released album, Frank. However, it was her follow up album, the 2006 released Back to Black that brought the singer-songwriter worldwide success. At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony, Winehouse won five Grammys including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album making her the only British female singer to win that many Grammys in one night at that time. With constant exposure to the public, Winehouse’s personal life soon started to unravel through the camera lenses of the paparazzi.

Although known for her impeccable musical talent, Winehouse was also known as an erratic party girl. Winehouse was constantly in the tabloids. During her life she was arrested several times for drug possession, assault, and even suspicion of tampering with an ongoing investigation. Tragically, her troubling personal life eventually took a weigh in on her flourishing career. Her untimely death in 2011, caused by accidental alcohol poisoning, was a sad loss for the music industry. Amy Winehouse is arguably one of the strongest talents of the 21st century.

Director Asif Kapadia’s use of personal archive footage of the singer feels both personal and reflective of Winehouse’s life. This film takes a unique dive into the life of Amy Winehouse, through the eyes of Winehouse herself. Amy, was highly praised at several film festivals including Cannes. The buzz surrounding this film combined with the legacy of Amy Winehouse is making this juggernaut turn out to quite possibly be the top documentary of the summer and even 2015 as a whole. This film will appeal to both music lovers and film lovers alike.
