A Guide to Sounds of Summer 2017

With summer right around the corner, the Burns is gearing up for its annual Sounds Of Summer series! From June 29 to August 17, the Burns will be showing timeless classics like Stop Making Sense alongside exciting new music documentaries like Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked The World and I Am The Blues. The former draws necessary parallels between ancient indigenous music and modern rock legends, while the latter focuses on blues sensations: Bobby Rush and other members of the “Chitlin Circuit.”
On opening night, we will show Monterey Pop in its gorgeously restored 4K high-definition. Relive the Summer Of Love as this film takes you on a trip back in time to one fateful weekend in June of 1967. Sit before screaming fans as you watch the future unfold at the Monterey International Pop Festival. Afterward, join us for a reception in the Jane Peck Gallery.
This year, we welcome back composer/producer/engineer, Scott Freiman, who for years has thrilled audiences with his live deconstructions of the Beatles’ discography, from the early days of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” to later albums like Rubber Soul and the White Album.
Last year, a few of the ultra talented filmmakers at the JBFC shot and edited several of Mr. Freiman’s incredible presentations so that we could screen them for the public. We are excited to show four different films, covering deconstructions of the Beatles’ White Album (catch this screening on July 31) Rubber Soul (August 1) Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (August 7) and Revolver (August 14).
Additionally, Mr. Freiman will return this year with three brand new presentations, in which he will discuss: the Birth of the Beatles, the Early Beatles, and the Magical Mystery Tour. Be prepared to laugh and applaud throughout the show as Mr. Freiman shows you a side of the Beatles you have never seen before!
But, of course, Sounds Of Summer encompasses more than the kings of rock. Maybe you are a die-hard fan of The Band (in which case, be sure to catch The Last Waltz on July 8th) or you love Ry Cooder (check out Wim Wenders’ Buena Vista Social Club on July 14th) or perhaps you adore Iggy Pop (Jim Jarmusch’s Gimme Danger plays on July 18th). No matter what music you’re in the mood for, the Burns has got you covered.
As Karen Goodman, one of our wonderful programmers puts it, “This year’s abundantly diverse films showcase brilliant musical performances and soulful characters—men and women whose lives and dreams underscore their passion, resilience, and infectious love of music.” Whether you miss the glory days of pop or you are nostalgic for a time you never got to experience first-hand, Sounds Of Summer has something for you.
